{"id":14084,"date":"2016-08-01T10:23:04","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T08:23:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shawellness.com\/shamagazine\/shamagazine\/?p=14084"},"modified":"2023-10-18T11:52:01","modified_gmt":"2023-10-18T09:52:01","slug":"is-stevia-a-healthy-alternative-to-sugar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shawellness.com\/shamagazine\/en\/is-stevia-a-healthy-alternative-to-sugar\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Stevia a healthy alternative to sugar?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>How good is stevia as a natural sugar substitute?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Following<a href=\"https:\/\/shawellness.com\/shamagazine\/en\/healthy-sweeteners\/\"><strong> our post about the healthiest sweeteners<\/strong><\/a>, several of you asked us to talk about<span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\"> <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stevia\">stevia<\/a>, an increasingly trendy sweetener that is used as a sugar substitute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is stevia? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stevia is a plant type pertaining to the sunflower family whose green leaves have a particularly sweet taste (up to 30 times sweeter than refined sugar) and it has been used since ancient time in South America and in the East to<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> sweeten foods naturally.<\/strong><\/span> In fact, Oriental medicine uses the leaves of stevia as a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">method to control diabetes<\/span> because of its <span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/shawellness.com\/shamagazine\/en\/healthy-sweeteners\/\">low glycemic index<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>But\u2026 How good is stevia as a sugar substitute? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The problem today is that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">organic stevia leaves<\/span> are not used. What people normally use are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">highly processed and refined products<\/span> that are far from the properties of natural stevia and are up to 300 times sweeter than sugar.
