All these factors are the <strong>perfect triggers to cause depression.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An aspect that is <strong>often overlooked<\/strong> when <strong>dealing with depression<\/strong> is<strong> diet.<\/strong> Our <a href=\"https:\/\/shawellness.com\/shamagazine\/en\/shamagazine\/how-what-you-eat-affects-your-mood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>gut health is strongly linked with our mental health<\/strong><\/a>, in fact, the gut is considered to be <strong>the \u2018second brain\u2019.<\/strong> Research has shown that the <strong>gut microbiota influences brain chemistry and behaviour.<\/strong> In addition, it influences serotonin and dopamine production, in fact, <strong>90% of serotonin is produced in the gut.<\/strong> For those who may need a recap on what serotonin is, it\u2019s <strong>the feel-good neurotransmitter that contributes to our happiness and wellbeing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Considering that today\u2019s diet largely consists of <strong>processed foods that completely disrupt the gut flora<\/strong>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/shawellness.com\/shamagazine\/guide-to-quitting-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sugar<\/a>, it is <strong>no wonder that depression is a commonality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shawellness.com\/shamagazine\/en\/shamagazine\/how-stress-affects-your-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stress<\/a> also completely wrecks havoc our digestive system<\/strong>, as well as our hormonal levels. When we\u2019re stressed, <strong>our cortisol levels increase<\/strong> (the stress hormone) and our <strong>serotonin and dopamine levels decrease<\/strong>, in turn,<strong> increasing our chances of suffering from depression.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, there is <strong>more you can do to treat depression<\/strong> instead of opting for the easy way out- anti-depressants.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>So, how can we treat depression naturally?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>First of all, <strong>diet plays a huge influence on mood.<\/strong> To support your gut health, <strong>it\u2019s best to eat a diet rich in vegetables, grains, fruits, probiotics, healthy fats and fish.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Probiotics are essential for gut health<\/strong>, as <strong>good bacteria are essential for our overall health<\/strong> and <strong>assimilation of nutrients<\/strong>.
