The <strong>majority<\/strong> of <strong>humans<\/strong> <strong>stop<\/strong> <strong>producing<\/strong> <strong>lactase<\/strong>, the <strong>enzyme<\/strong> that <strong>digests lactose<\/strong>, after <strong>breastfeeding<\/strong> from their mother. That\u2019s why, so <strong>many people<\/strong> <strong>suffer<\/strong> from <strong>bloating<\/strong>, <strong>gas<\/strong> and <strong>digestive issues<\/strong> when <strong>consuming dairy<\/strong>. It is estimated that <strong>75% of people<\/strong> end up <strong>developing<\/strong> <strong>intolerance<\/strong> to <strong>lactose<\/strong>, which as a result, <strong>causes<\/strong> our body to convert <strong>lactose<\/strong> to an <strong>antigen<\/strong>, <strong>affecting<\/strong> our <strong>health negatively<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why<\/strong> do we <strong>consume dairy products then?<\/strong> There is a<strong> social consensus<\/strong> that <strong>milk<\/strong> is the <strong>only source<\/strong> of <strong>calcium<\/strong> and you <strong>need<\/strong> it for <strong>strong bones<\/strong>. However, <strong>milk<\/strong> <strong>isn\u2019t<\/strong> the <strong>only source<\/strong> of <strong>calcium<\/strong>, in fact, there are <strong>many plant-based foods<\/strong> which are <strong>equally<\/strong> or <strong>increasingly<\/strong> <strong>rich<\/strong> in <strong>calcium<\/strong> and are <strong>absorbed<\/strong> much <strong>better<\/strong> by the body. As they <strong>come from plants<\/strong>, our <strong>digestive system<\/strong> <strong>digests<\/strong> them much <strong>easier<\/strong> and is <strong>able<\/strong> to <strong>absorb<\/strong> their <strong>nutrients<\/strong> much <strong>more effectively<\/strong>, <strong>without<\/strong> the unwanted <strong>symptoms<\/strong> that <strong>dairy can cause<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Fun fact!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>An interesting fact is that the <strong>countries<\/strong> that <strong>consume most dairy products<\/strong> are those who have<strong> higher rates<\/strong> of <strong>osteoporosis<\/strong>, and those who <strong>rarely consume<\/strong> it, like countries in <strong>Africa<\/strong> and <strong>Asia<\/strong>, have <strong>lower rates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When we think of calcium, we immediately think of milk, however, we\u2019re going to look at <strong>other plant-based<\/strong> <strong>foods<\/strong> that are <strong>surprisingly richer in calcium<\/strong>. Let\u2019s <strong>compare<\/strong> how much <strong>calcium<\/strong> there is in 1<strong>00g of different foods<\/strong>. To start off, <strong>milk<\/strong> has <strong>125mg of calcium<\/strong>.
