It is a <strong>vital restorative mechanism<\/strong> that <strong>keeps us healthy<\/strong>. In fact, thanks to a <strong>study<\/strong> <strong>conducted<\/strong> by the<strong> Journal of Sleep Research,<\/strong> it <strong>has been proven<\/strong> that <strong>sleeping less than 5 hours<\/strong> a day <strong>increases<\/strong> your <strong>mortality<\/strong> rate <strong>by 65%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>However<\/strong>, whilst <strong>many of us<\/strong> would <strong>like<\/strong> to aim to <strong>sleep more than 6 hours<\/strong>, <strong>many people<\/strong> have <strong>trouble sleeping<\/strong> or suffer from <strong>sleeping disorders<\/strong> such as <strong>insomnia<\/strong>, which makes it <strong>hard to get<\/strong> the <strong>sufficient sleep<\/strong> our<strong> body needs<\/strong> to <strong>work optimally<\/strong>. That\u2019s why, we\u2019ve shared <strong>natural ways<\/strong> to <strong>improve<\/strong> the <strong>quality<\/strong> of your <strong>sleep<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Do some light exercise<\/strong> a few hours before going to bed, but nothing too intense, as that will wake you up again. A walk or a yoga class would be perfect.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen to your body<\/strong>, and avoid going to bed hungry or thirsty because that could wake you up in the middle of the night or stop you from sleeping well. You should also keep in mind that if you\u2019re going to eat dinner, there should be at least 2 hours between the time you eat and the time you go to bed, and you should stop drinking liquids an hour before going to bed.<\/li>\n<li>Remember that your <strong>dinner should be light.<\/strong> If you can, eat foods rich in tryptophan, as this can help you fall asleep more easily.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid coffee, tobacco, and alcohol before going to bed.<\/strong> They alter your nervous system and nearly guarantee that you\u2019ll wake up in the middle of the night.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Establish a routine<\/strong> with a set time to go to bed and wake up. Your body will get used to it.<\/li>\n<li>If you can\u2019t fall asleep within 15 minutes of going to bed, <strong>do a short stretching session<\/strong> or some breathing exercises on a mat.
