That is why <strong>anxiety and prolonged stress<\/strong> not only cause mental symptoms but can also lead to <strong>physical ailments<\/strong> such as muscle knots, tension or stiffness. \u201cMost of the time, an earlier <strong>muscular imbalance<\/strong> is the real origin of the pain, which is aggravated by ongoing stress or states of anxiety\u201d, says Jos\u00e9 Luis Tabue\u00f1a, head of the Physiotherapy Unit at SHA. \u201cSo, <strong>when the muscle isn\u2019t in good health<\/strong>, continuous stressful stimuli accentuate tension and pain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This means that good physical and mental health is the best way to prevent and alleviate contractures caused by <strong>poor emotional management<\/strong>. But, as Jos\u00e9 Luis explains, \u201cif you want more effective results, <strong>work on the musculature<\/strong> to strike the right muscular balance. This way, you\u2019ll be better prepared when you\u2019re faced with a <strong>stressful stimulus<\/strong>. Muscle imbalance happens because you use some muscles more than others and this leads to <strong>compensations<\/strong> that affect the <strong>muscles<\/strong> from working together in harmony, which makes you more vulnerable and sensitive to muscle pain caused by stress or anxiety\u201d. To avoid this, Jos\u00e9 Luis recommends a series of the most effective exercises, disciplines and therapies:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Exercises to <strong>tone and strengthen<\/strong> the cervical musculature, shoulders and shoulder girdle, especially the rhomboid muscles, lower trapezius, serratus anterior, the shoulder external rotators and deep neck flexors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stretch<\/strong> the entire body to keep <strong>muscles flexible<\/strong>, relieving tension in turn.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Joint mobilisation<\/strong> exercises to help maintain good joint mobility.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heat therapy<\/strong> treatments to reduce discomfort and improve circulation in tense muscles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Massage therapy <\/strong>treatments and gentle manual techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Activities such as <strong>yoga<\/strong>, pilates and tai chi, because they work both body and mind at the same time.<\/li>\n<li>Relaxation techniques, such as pranayama breathing, <strong>meditation<\/strong> and the contraction and relaxation of various muscle groups in phases.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learning to keep your emotions in check is essential for preventing muscle contractions and pains.
