The food you eat plays an important role in your health, how you feel and how you look. There are ancient healing foods that have been used for many different ailments because of their anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Now that the change of season is near, it’s time to include these foods on a daily basis to strengthen the immune system and prevent getting sick. These foods should ideally be eaten throughout the year, but, especially in seasons of weather change where your health can be compromised.

In ancient medicine, food is seen as medicine, and that’s exactly what these foods are, natural medicines that promote health and healing.

These foods will support your immune system, aid digestion, reduce bloating and help manage stress in the body.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s important to eat foods which are anti-inflammatory as they help the body fight infections and repair tissue damage. It lowers blood sugar levels and has a strong anti-diabetic effect.

Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the most healing spices to exist. It’s a spice used in Asian dishes, especially in countries like India. Its active ingredient curcumin is what makes this spice a potent natural remedy. There’s growing scientific evidence showing that curcumin has anti-cancerous effects. It has the ability of killing cancer cells and preventing new ones from growing. It is also a powerful antioxidant, has anti-inflammatory properties, and therefore helps heal inflammation in the body. If you’re suffering from any kind of pain, whether it’s a headache or menstrual cramps, making a turmeric and ginger tea can be very soothing.

Ginger

Ginger is another Asian food rich in healing properties. From aiding digestion, reduce nausea, and boost the immune system to avoid getting the flu, or treating it. It combines really well with turmeric. Boil the two in water to make a ginger and turmeric tea. You can also add cinnamon to sweeten it a bit.

Garlic

Garlic is commonly found across many dishes, especially in certain cuisines. What many of us don’t realize is how beneficial it is to our health. Its immune-boosting and anti-bacterial properties make garlic a potent food to prevent getting a cold or flu. Incorporate this healing food in your daily meals and if possible, it’s best to eat it raw to reap all of its benefits.

Lemons

We all know that vitamin C is very important for immune function. When transitioning into autumn, where temperatures drop and we are more susceptible to getting sick, make sure to have a daily dosage of lemon. The perfect way to do this is by starting your day with warm water with lemon. You can also incorporate some of the other foods mentioned, like cinnamon, turmeric and ginger. It’s an easy to way to have these healing foods on a daily basis and making sure your immune system is taken care of.

Aim to include these foods regularly to strengthen your immune system and prevent getting ill. You’ll notice that by eating them regularly, you’ll feel much stronger, healthier and will avoid getting sick. And if you’re ever feeling under the weather, just make sure to up your dosage of these foods, and you’ll reverse the effects of the symptoms.

Like Hippocrates famously said, “let food by the medicine, and medicine by thy food”.
