On 30 September, SHA Wellness Clinic organised an environmental activity on the beaches and coves of Albir which resulted in the collection of 600 kilos of rubbish. The 30 participating volunteers, including talents from different areas of the company and the Change Makers Team, covered a seven hectares area, removing a large amount of polluting waste from the environment. The waste collected included plastics, glass and common packaging, household appliances, garden furniture and even mattresses and mosquito nets were found. All were sorted into the right bins for each type of waste.
Living in harmony with nature and its cycles and caring for and respecting the environment have been part of SHA’s DNA since it opened its doors in 2008. In fact, reducing our ecological footprint as much as possible is an objective, almost an obsession, which was already a part of the construction of the clinic itself, which was adapted to the land to reduce its impact on the environment, with priority given to the use of natural materials and resources. A perfect example of our commitment to the planet is the lighting of the outdoor spaces, which was designed both to minimise energy consumption and not to disturb the natural biological rhythm of the animal species that share the space with us.
By organising cleaning and reforestation activities we manage, on the one hand, to reduce the negative impact on the environment and, on the other, to strengthen group cooperation and raise public awareness about the need to not waste natural resources. Because at SHA we know that any gesture, no matter how small, is important and can lead to a great global change.
That is why we are committed to the circular economy and our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The time has come to move past the economic model based on extraction, production and disposal and replace it with one rooted in the concepts of reduce, reuse, recycle and redesign.
As Olga Prokoptsiv, Quality and Sustainability Executive at SHA Wellness Clinic, tells us, “the waste collection on the beach was supported by the Alfaz del Pi Town Council, specifically with the help of the Councillor for Tourism, Environment and Beaches, Luis Morant, and the councillor’s advisor, Richard Barreno. The volunteers spent two hours touring different areas of the Sierra Heladala Natural Park: the coves of Metge and Amerador, the Faro del Albir promenade, as well as the Bulevar de los Músicos, a green enclave whose main purpose is to provide excess water during rainy periods an outlet to the sea”.
The 600 kilos of waste collected are a striking and immediate visual representation of the enormous amount of rubbish humans produce, but also the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of the problem and share the knowledge necessary to solve it. At SHA we are on a mission to be the change we want to see in the world. Because we are the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the earth we walk on. In short, if we take care of nature, it will take care of us.
