The acronym NAD may not mean anything to you, but it stands for Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide, a coenzyme present in almost every cell in the body which decreases as we age. Optimal levels of NAD are associated with a good life span and longevity.

One of SHA Wellness Clinic’s most successful anti-aging treatments is the NAD & Mito-Rebalance therapy, a comprehensive anti-aging treatment which improves cardiometabolic health, reduces chronic inflammation, and strengthens the immune system. In addition, it slows down cognitive decline, sarcopenia, and age-related frailty.

Balancing the NAD coenzyme levels has been shown to be an anti-ageing therapy that attacks several aspects of ageing at once, since it increases the body’s energy levels, improves mental clarity and promotes a sense of well-being.

NAD coenzyme levels are replenished intravenously with the goal to improve cardiometabolic health, reduce chronic inflammation, and immune and cognitive decline.

Dr. Rosario García, expert in Anti-Aging Medicine at SHA Wellness Clinic, explains that NAD is a molecule that plays an essential role in several biological functions. “It is found in all living cells and is crucial in many metabolic reactions. It acts as a coenzyme, which means that it regulates and facilitates the chemical reactions in the body. It is also involved in key processes, such as energy production, DNA repair, regulation of metabolism, and maintenance of cellular health,” she says.

The expert explains that, during ageing, NAD production decreases naturally and its degradation increases. “In oxidative stress processes caused by various factors, such as an unhealthy diet, exposure to environmental toxins, lack of sleep, and chronic stress, NAD levels are depleted. In general, an unhealthy lifestyle, characterised by being sedentary, a poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking, contributes to a decrease in NAD levels in the body,” says Dr. Garcia.

Replenishing NAD levels can have several benefits. These include improved cellular functionof the body. “By increasing NAD levels, cellular health and the repair of damaged DNA are promoted, which has a positive impact on overall health and slows down the ageing process,” Garcia explains.

NAD is involved in the production of adenosine triphosphate, the main source of energy in the cells. Therefore, this treatment multiplies the body’s energy production. It also promotes a healthy and balanced metabolism, since NAD is involved in the regulation of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. “NAD replenishment can help strengthen the immune system and improve the body’s ability to fight disease,” the expert assures.

This therapy is used in various contexts and can be beneficial in different situations. “It is generally recommended for people seeking to improve their general health and wellbeing, since, after treatment, energy increases, mental clarity improves, and a pleasant feeling of wellbeing is experienced,” Dr. García states.

On the other hand,” she explains, “the decrease in NAD levels is associated with ageing and the development of diverse chronic diseases. In some cases, NAD replacement is used as a therapeutic approach to address these conditions and promote a better overall health of the patient”.

NAD replenishment is a safe therapy, although there are some possible contraindications which must be evaluated by the medical professional, who will be the one to assess the eligibility of each patient to undergo this therapy.
