The skin is our primary defence mechanism against external agents and also a visual display of the physical signs of ageing. After 30 years of age, the skin starts to lose the substances responsible for maintaining elasticity and firmness, leading to undesired saggy, wrinkled skin.
Platelet-rich plasma treatment is an innovative therapy that can help to prevent the effects of time and to recover youthful, glowing skin.

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Blood is made up of two components: an aqueous plasma element and a cellular element. These two components can be separated by centrifuging blood.During this process, the different cellular components are deposited on the bottom of the centrifuge according to their weight. Platelets are the last components to be deposited due to their small size. Therefore, stopping the centrifuge before they are deposited obtains platelet-rich plasma.

Platelet-rich plasma treatment

PRP therapy is an ideal skin rejuvenation treatment for mature skin showing signs of loss of elasticity due to ageing. The aim is to stop the skin’s ageing process and to activate its regeneration using platelets that possess substances called growth factors, which stimulate cell regeneration and division. This treatment improves skin quality for clear and youthful skin, while reducing looseness and wrinkles.
Platelet-rich plasma is obtained from the patient’s own blood. The first step in the treatment involves the extraction of the patient’s blood by health specialists.Next, the blood is centrifuged to extract the plasma that will be used in the treatment.Lastly, the plasma is applied to the skin through microinjections to get down to the deepest layers of skin, where it will activate cell regeneration.

The advantages and disadvantages of platelet-rich plasma treatment

This is an outpatient procedure that does not require admission to hospital or anaesthesia. You can go home the same day and get on with your life as normal.
It is a simple treatment that lasts just thirty minutes and leaves practically no mark on the skin, except for a red point at the site of infiltration that disappears within a day.Although it is recommended to take extra care with prolonged sun exposure a few days before having the treatment.
Platelet-rich plasma treatment is harmless and does not cause any allergies or rejections as it is a product that comes from your own body, and therefore it is totally free from chemicals and toxins. That is why it is so good for your skin.
This treatment can be taken at any time of the year, provided that the skin is protected at all times against excessive cold and heat.
It is not a permanent treatment. It should be repeated two to three times a year to keep the skin rejuvenation mechanisms active.
