Social awareness to strengthen sunscreen is increasingly achieved but it is worth to remark its importance now summer is arriving, as summer is the time of year where the sun can damage more our skin health. As we know, protecting from the sun is essential to prevent sunspots and burns that sometimes may even lead to skin cancer.

However, we don’t need to give up sunbathing in the summer if we make sure to protect adequately and enjoy the advantages of sunbathing: it gives us vitamin D, it makes us happy, it makes us sleep better and even it can increase life length… but whenever you sunbath with caution.

Sunscreens, today, are more than just protective and better be well informed to know what sunblock we need in each case. Their formulations are so sophisticated that we find products that serve several functions in one application, smart textures with thousands of properties (sun cream, sun spray, sun lotion, sun oil…). But how do they work? What is the best protector for your skin type? What is the right cosmetic ritual?

There are three basic types of sunscreens among which we can choose according to our skin type and needs:

  • Physical sunscreens: They are known as “total sunscreens”. They are filters that reflect sunlight act as a mirror, preventing sunlight to penetrate the skin, forming a film. These filters result in denser texture sun creams and they ensure high sun protection.
  • Chemical sunscreens: they work, rather than as a mirror, as a sponge. These filters absorb some of the rays that reach the skin and transform them into new energy that is not harmful to the skin, preventing them from reaching the deeper layers and damage them. Their main advantages are that they are more deeply absorbed and they leave no white skin, but you should apply them more frequently.
  • Biological sunscreens: they seem to be the future. Biological protectors have specific actions on important enzymes in preventing sun damage. No numerical coding, they are not yet fully incorporated the current cosmetics and there is much research to do, but some dermatologists say they will gain ground to the others in the near future.

Three aspects for a good sunscreen:

– Having more than SPF15 (for white skins for the first few days of sun exposure is recommended at least SPF30 or even SPF50). The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measure of how effectively a sunscreen will defend us against ultraviolet (UV-B).

– Being waterproof and sweat

– No cause allergies or skin irritation

In addition, we remind you that any sunscreen should be applied half an hour before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours or after swimming in the water. Moreover, the most dangerous hours for sunbathing are between 12 noon to 4 pm. During those hours, covering up with clothing, sunglasses and a hat will help you prevent sun damage.
