Why supplements are the key to achieving optimal health

Dietary supplements help compensate for the lack of nutrients caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.

An unhealthy diet, a sedentary lifestyle, poor sleep, the passage of time and genetics are factors that cause nutritional deficits that push us in the opposite direction of optimal health and well-being and reduce our stamina and energy. As Gloria Sabater, expert in Preventive Medicine at SHA Wellness Clinic, explains, “each person is genetically different and has a different lifestyle, so not all supplements are right for everyone. It is therefore essential to personalise and adapt supplementation to each individual’s real needs”.

A common mistake is to start taking a supplement that a friend, family member or co-worker is having success with. In fact, supplements should always be prescribed by a specialist after a detailed analysis of biomarkers. “At SHA, we have a wide range of options for all kinds of situations. Depending on the specific needs and objectives of each guest (sleep problems, weight loss, detox, controlling cholesterol or glucose levels, improving cognitive or neurological functions, strengthening immunity), we recommend one supplement or another”, adds the doctor.

Of course, supplements are a tool that helps us to improve biomarkers, but they should never be used as a substitute for a healthy and balanced diet, regular physical exercise and, in general, healthy lifestyle habits. That said, and underscoring the importance of personalising treatment, Gloria tells us that most people are deficient in vitamin D and Omega-3. “Vitamin D is essential for strengthening the immune system, controlling inflammatory processes and combating osteoporosis, which is the reduction in bone density. Omega-3 fatty acids, found mainly in oily fish, improve neurological function and vision, protect cardiovascular health, control inflammation and increase the flexibility of cell membranes. Despite the fact that we have many hours of sunshine a day in Spain (key to synthesising vitamin D) and, being surrounded by the sea, we have relatively easy access to fish, there is a generalised deficit of these two nutrients”.

Among the wide variety of SHA supplements, Gloria mentions one in particular: Immun’Âge. “Made from fermented papaya, it enhances both innate and acquired immunity, promotes liver detoxification and eliminates excess free radicals, thus reducing oxidative stress. In addition, it can produce nitric oxide when a virus, bacteria or fungus attacks, which helps the body to fight the threat. It is especially indicated as an anti-ageing treatment, to prevent illnesses and, in addition, it increases stamina and energy. In short, it makes you feel good and feel like doing things”.
