NAD: the coenzyme that prevents ageing

Perhaps you have never heard of the coenzyme NAD. Or maybe you have. In any case, that minute component of your body is responsible for making many things function. When it becomes unbalanced or when it degrades, which happens over time, it is as if a perfect mechanism is disrupted.

In order to restore normal NAD levels, NAD & Mito-Rebalance therapy is applied to improve cardiometabolic health, reduce chronic inflammation and cognitive decline.

It is one of SHA Wellness Clinic’s most successful treatments, since it works as an integral anti-aging treatment that strengthens the immune system and reduces cognitive decline, sarcopenia and age-related frailty. It is a therapy that simultaneously attacks several flanks of the ageing process.

We will explain how all these benefits are achieved just by rebalancing the levels of a coenzyme. NAD (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is found in almost every cell in the body. Dr. Rosario García, expert in Revitalising and Anti-Aging Medicine at SHA Wellness Clinic, explains that it is a molecule that plays an essential role in several biological functions. “It is of crucial importance in many metabolic reactions, acting as a coenzyme, which means that it regulates and facilitates the chemical reactions in the body. It is also involved in energy production, DNA repair, the regulation of metabolism and the maintenance of cellular health,” she points out.

As Garcia explains, during the ageing process, the production of NAD decreases naturally and its degradation increases. “In oxidative stress processes caused by an unhealthy diet, exposure to environmental toxins, lack of sleep or chronic stress, NAD levels are depleted”.

An unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking also contribute to a decrease in NAD levels in the body.

Replenishing its levels intravenously – precisely what this therapy does – improves cardiometabolic health, reduces chronic inflammation and immune and cognitive decline.

In addition, replenishing NAD levels can improve cell function. “By increasing NAD levels, cellular health and the repair of damaged DNA are promoted, which helps to slow down the ageing process and has a positive impact on health,” adds Dr. Garcia.

NAD is involved in the production of adenosine triphosphate, the main source of energy in the cells. Therefore, after rebalancing his/her levels with the help of this therapy, the patient will experience something akin to an ‘energy boost’. In addition, the treatment promotes a healthy and balanced metabolism, as NAD is involved in the regulation of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. “NAD replenishment can help strengthen the immune system and improve the body’s ability to fight disease,” says Dr Garcia.

This therapy is used in a number of contexts and can be beneficial in different situations. “It is generally recommended for people seeking to improve their general health and wellbeing, because after treatment energy increases, mental clarity improves and a pleasant feeling of wellbeing is experienced,” the expert points out.

Dr García explains that it can also be used by people who wish to enhance their athletic performance, as it improves energy efficiency and increases endurance and the ability to recover. “On the other hand, decreased levels of NAD have been associated with ageing and the development of various chronic diseases,” the expert explains.

NAD replenishment is a safe therapy, although there are some possible contraindications that must be evaluated by the medical professional who will assess the suitability of each patient to undergo this therapy.
