Our memory is one of our most prized possessions. Without it, we’re unable to function properly. As we age, if we don’t take care of our cognitive health, we can start to see it decline. Fortunately, there are preventative measures we can take in order to diminish the possibilities of developing degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. Whether you are young or at an older age, taking care of our brain is critical.

In order for the brain to work optimally, Bruno Ribeiro, neurologist at SHA Wellness Clinic, claims we need to nourish it with brainpower foods. Research proves that what we eat has a direct affect on our cognitive function; therefore, it’s essential we feed it with the right foods to boost its power.

What foods improve memory and prevent cognitive diseases?

Avocados

The human brain is nearly 60% fat; therefore, we need to nourish it with healthy, unsaturated fats. Avocados are rich in vitamin K and folate, amongst many other nutrients, which improve cognitive function, especially memory and concentration.

Tip: Add them to your salads, smoothies or toasts!

Beetroot

This red root vegetable contains natural nitrate that boosts blood flow in the brain, helping improve mental performance.

Blueberries

Who doesn’t love blueberries? Turns out they’re amazing for your brain! The high levels of gallic acid they contain are good at preventing brain degeneration and stress.

Coconut oil

Studies show that including coconut oil in your daily diet prevents Alzheimer and dementia. It is a natural anti-inflammatory that prevents memory loss.

Cacao

It may come as a surprise, but pure cacao is actually a superfood! It is proven to increase blood circulation in the brain, improving concentration and memory.

Salmon

Omega-3 fatty acids are absolutely essential for brain health. Not only do foods like salmon improve cognitive development, but they also prevent disorders such as depression!

Walnuts

It is no wonder that walnuts are good for the brain, they even look like mini brains! They improve cognitive health, helping prevent diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Want to improve your memory and brainpower? Make sure to include these foods into your daily diet!
