Turmeric, also called “the queen of spices” is one of the spices with more beneficial properties for health. It’s a mustard-color plant which is not only used in cooking as it has a long history of medicinal use in China and in the ayurvedic medicine. It’s not as popular as curry but more beneficial for the health. That’s why we wanted to share the uses and benefits of Tumeric with all SHA magazine readers.

Benefits

Turmeric is rich in curcumin, one of the most studied ingredients, which contains therapeutic properties for a wide range of diseases such as cancer prevention. In addition, its use may provide many benefits as the following:

  • Helps prevent Alzheimer’s disease
  • Helps relieve arthritis
  • Improves digestion process
  • Helps detoxify the liver
  • It has antibacterial and antiseptic properties
  • It heals wounds
  • Helps in pulmonary and hepatic diseases
  • Powerful anti-inflammatory that prevents infections
  • Relieves cardiovascular problems
  • Destroys cancer cells
  • Relieves pain in neurological diseases

What is it used for?

Due to its many properties, natural herbal remedies with turmeric are often used to relieve stomach diseases, to recover from injuries, to treat asthma (due to its anti-inflammatory properties) and to treat pain related to menstrual cramps.

In addition, many studies have shown that curcumin can destroy cancer cells such as colon, pancreas and bone marrow cancer.

How is it used?

Due to its moustard-yellowish color it’s used in cooking as a natural colourant for foods and to provide a sweet and lightly spicy taste to sauces and stews, just as curry. It’s also used in the arabian cuisine in dishes like cous cous or chicken tajine. Due to its flavour it’s a perfect substitute to moustard or saffron although it’s recommended to use it in moderation because it can be too spicy.

In order to get medicinal results is not enough adding it to your dishes. Nowadays it’s easy to find it as supplements shape in natural stores. Another natural option that can help it to be absorbed is mixing a teaspoon of turmeric powder with a litre of boiling water and let it cool before drinking.

Now you know the multiple benefits of turmeric, don’t wait to include it as part of a healthy and balanced diet!
