Practice mindfulness to improve your mood and energy. Fall has come and with it, we try to cling to the last rays of sun that remind us of summer, and the calmness and idleness we enjoyed during our vacations. But in life, everything is a cycle and the long summer days have given way to a new season that brings less light and worse weather.
This change of season is related to our mood, and it seems that we get depressed in some way and feel more lethargic about doing things. Why does this happen?
Relationship between the change of season and the change of mood
Exposure to natural light improves our mood because we produce serotonin, which is associated with a positive mood state and which increases with exposure to sunlight. With the change of season from summer to fall, daylight hours diminish. You’re exposed less to the sun, the brain secretes less serotonin and your mood worsens.
In addition, when the temperature drops, you feel less like doing activities outside, so we interact with others less and our psychological well-being also declines.
Mindfulness to combat seasonal depression
Mindfulness is a technique that is quite fashionable lately, but what does it refer to?
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness, or full attention, is a relaxation technique that takes breathing as its base. We become conscious of the present moment when you let thoughts flow without judging them. In other words, this is about focusing our attention on our breathing, so that we stay in the here and now. In this way, we move away from those worries that generate anxiety.
How does it work?
We have to pay attention to our breathing. This makes us focus on the present moment and avoid things that cause us unease. When we say we have to let our thoughts flow without judging them, it’s because although we try to focus on our breathing, we can easily start thinking of other things automatically. At these times, we don’t have to fight against our thoughts, but it’s better to leave them there, while redirecting our attention to our breathing.
Thus, little by little we enter into a state of relaxation and inner peace that helps us to feel better with ourselves.
Benefits of mindfulness
One of the main benefits of this technique is that we increase the sensation of well-being, which means we increase the serotonin levels in the brain. This makes us feel good, and therefore it helps us to combat bad moods due to seasonal change.
In addition, it helps to reduce stress, anxiety and improves our sleep.
As we can observe, mindfulness contributes numerous benefits to our body. Therefore, if minimal light and the cold make you sad or put you in a bad mood, we invite you to practice this wonderful technique so you can experience its benefits for yourself.
