The effects of weather on mood

Numerous studies have shown that our surrounding climate can greatly affect our bodies, both physical and metal. Mild weather, for example, is believed to not only improve one’s mood but also one’s health.

On the other hand fatigue, hopelessness, irritability, sadness, anxiety, apathy… are some of the symptoms of the “autumn depression”. A seasonal disorder that affects six out of every hundred people being more common in adults than in children.

According to some studies, it can be triggered as a brain’s response to decreased sunlight, the lack of vitamin D and the relationship with some important hormones in the regulation of the energy, mood and sleep cycles, such as melatonin and serotonin, also known as the”happiness” hormones .

Our emotional balance depends on many factors, both internal and external. If in addition to the usual problems as the worries for the children, love issues and working routine we add other reasons that influence our mood as the climate or the seasonal changes, our mood becomes a carousel of emotions, sometimes very difficult to control.

We present some simple recommendations to help you improve your mood and let you begin autumn on a easier way:

  • Get involved – Make any social activity in group in which you will be able to interact with others. This will help you feel comfortable with yourself and get a great deal of wellbeing.

  • Exercise – Take a walk, join a gym, make fitness, yoga or pilates. Making some exercise and being in touch with ourselves helps releasing tensions, improve our physical and mental health and provide us a feeling of gratitude and happiness.

  • Eat well – Include foods that contain vitamin C in your routine, foods to have more energy as chocolate, and vitamin D that replaces the lack of sunlight needed by the body.

  • Redecorate – Include some accessories in your home as candles, cushions or keep the curtains open so the light can come in. Incorporate some changes in your office and include some decoration that provides a touch of color and happiness.

  • Indulge yourself – Prepare a special dish, prepare a bath with salts, get pretty and let you some time to make your favorite hobby.

  • Motivate yourself – Leave sad music for another occasion and sign up to hear songs that rise your spirit. Recover those songs that makes you smile and dance with the melody.

  • Rate your wellbeing – Mark the comfort level that each activity produces you from 0 to 100. This will help you be aware and have a realistic view of the activities that have a positive influence on your mood.

  • Instruct yourself – the internal language we have with ourselves is very important. Just think about the negative self-instructions we anticipate when we begin a day we know is going to be hard. Try to use simple positive quotes of support specially at the beginning, at the end of the day and in difficult moments and see how your days change their color.

These are some of the activities that produce those small moments of pleasure you need and will help you avoid that the effects of weather on mood take control of you. Dare to implement them!

And whether you are looking to recover from a disease or to achieve an optimal state of health, at SHA you will find a pleasantly mild microclimate with fantastic temperatures throughout the year. The region was even recently declared to be one of the places with the best weather in the world by the World Health Organization – an essential factor when it comes to preserving an optimum state of health.
